Start Date:
May 2001
Completion Date: November 2001
Technologies Evaluated:

Objectives:

Gather relevant design data, installation techniques, specialized equipment needs, and cost information for the technologies under evaluation.

General Construction Information:

A home incorporating MADE (Marketable, Durable, Affordable, Entry-level) home concepts with light-gauge floor and roof system and ICF walls.

Significant Results:
  • The crew faced challenges and needed to develop innovative details for embedding bolts into the ICF walls, attaching the rim joist, and constructing roof components like valley girders, the ridge pole, and collar ties. Since the job has been completed, the industry has addressed many of these issues with hardware and prescriptive design details.
  • The use of screws for attaching the floor deck led to increased labor time over a wood system using pneumatic nailers. The crew experimented with various screws and fastening tools before reaching an optimal solution.
  • Labor time for the steel floor joist system in an ICF wall, compared to a standard wooden I-joist system was greater, but at the same labor rates, the steel floor joist floor system cost less.
