In order to determine opportunities for solar water heating, researchers conducted a series of eight focus groups in three regions across the United States. The groups investigated regional differences in construction practices and familiarity with solar water heating. Participants represented a diverse group of builders, architects, and trade contractors who had varied experiences with solar water heating. Results included in this final report include barriers to the adoption of solar water heating, such as builder and buyer satisfaction with existing gas water heaters, negative perceptions of solar water heating, lack of market demand and concerns about integration, durability, leaking, first cost and payback periods.
