This background paper for homebuilders, remodelers and editors describes a first-of-its-kind photovoltaic (PV) system installed on the roof of one of the 21st Century Townhouses in the NAHB Research Home Park in Bowie, Maryland. The innovative PV system includes photovoltaic modules incorporated into metal roofing units and serves as the home’s roof while simultaneously generating electricity for use in the home. This paper provides information on the PV installation on the 21st Century townhouse, as well as general background information on PV technology.
