L-Shaped Header Field Guide

December 1999

This field guide provides span tables and construction details for L-shaped headers in residential and light commercial construction. The tables in this guide apply to the construction of double L-headers installed in buildings not more than two stories high, with each story not more than 10 feet high. Steel L-shaped headers constructed in accordance with this guide are limited by the applicability limits of the Prescriptive Method for Residential Cold-Formed Steel Framing, second edition, which are included in the guide.

The span tables provide the maximum allowable span for double L-headers due to gravity loads and due to uplift loads. In addition to the tables, the field guide provides an overview of L-shaped headers, an explanation of how L-shaped headers are identified and construction details, including step-by-step instructions and diagrams.
