Monotonic Tests of Cold-Formed Steel Shear Walls with Openings

This document presents the results of monotonic tests of 40-foot long cold-formed steel shear walls with openings. This research was conducted as a response to the recognition of the need to efficiently design steel framing for lateral loads produced by winds and seismic forces.

The report discusses lateral force resistance and displacement response; compares capacities predicted with an empirical design approach known as "Perforated Shearwalls" with measured capacities; and highlights ultimate capacity, initial stiffness and energy dissipation. Findings from the monotonic tests indicate that light-gauge steel-framed shear walls are a viable alternative for residential construction in high wind and seismic regions.
