This Forest Products Laboratory publication acts as a guide for the selection and application of exterior stains for wood. Exterior stains protect the wood surface from sunlight and moisture. This publication describes the properties of stains and wood, methods for the application of stains and the expected service life of stains. If wood structures are given proper care initially and are maintained periodically, they can be functional and structurally sound, as well as aesthetically pleasing, for decades.
