Evaluation
Start Date:
June 2003
Completion Date: November 2003
Technologies Evaluated:

Objectives:
  • Determine which connections are appropriate for clinching
  • Identify some of the practical issues associated with the use of a clinching tool on a jobsite
  • Compare clinching versus screw connections
  • Identify code and design issues with clinching versus screw connections
General Construction Information:

Site 1: Steel-framed home on slab-on-grade foundation

Site 2: Steel-framed military housing

Significant Results:
  • The clinching tool appears to have a payback period of about 6 months or less when compared to screw gun connections made in a panelization plant
  • The clinching tool may not be suitable for all connections due to limitations on access to the studs for making connections
  • There may be issues with achieving code approval with clinching in structural applications
  • The clinching tool is more suited to the panelization process than on the jobsite
