Technologies Evaluated:

Objectives:
  • To achieve a Gold rating according the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, using a locally available home design.
  • To choose, install, and evaluate technologies to create a guideline on how builders and consumers can make their home designs a PATH Advanced Technology home.
  • Obtain information on the cost to install and use resource-efficient technologies, and determine how well they work in an actual project.
General Construction Information:

Using the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, the base design for a single-family detached home was examined for ways to make the home's systems greener and more efficient. While the home's basic design and layout were not altered, several green and performance enhancing modifications were added.

The home is approximately 2,500 square feet, with 4 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms on two floors, plus basement. It also includes a 2-car garage connected by a breezeway and a covered porch.

Significant Results:

With modifications in place, the house design's score under the Model Guidelines changed from one that did not warrant a Bronze rating (161 points) to one that easily achieved a Gold rating (400 total points). Research for specific evaluated technolgies is underway.
