House Design

Three-bedroom, two-bath, 1,270-square foot home built in 1986 on uninsulated slab foundation. 2x4 wood-frame construction insulated with R-11 fiberglass batts, R-19 blown-in cellulose attic insulation, and stucco exterior finish. Double-glazed, aluminum windows cover 14 percent of wall area, heating and cooling equipment from 1986 (9.5 SEER air conditioner and 75 AFUE gas furnace).

Evaluation Methodology

  • Conduct energy audit including blower door and duct blaster tests
  • Interview occupants regarding energy use habits
  • Model the effect of potential energy retrofit measures using Energy-10 software
  • Select energy retrofit measures based on simple payback results of modeling
  • Monitor specific loads and ambient conditions using data logger. Monitor select appliance loads by a non-intrusive appliance load monitoring system mounted at the service entrance panel.
