Objectives:
  • Monitor energy savings from renewable energy production systems. Compare solar water heater with tankless auxiliary system to a conventional electric tank water heater.
  • Verify overall performance of net-zero energy homes.
General Construction Information:

The 99-lot infill development features energy and resource efficient homes, including two net-zero energy homes. Initial field data collected information on two of the single-family homes (House A and House B) in the development.

Significant Results:
  • The ICS solar water heater with tankless water heater back-up used one-third the energy of a tank-type water heate.
  • 27 percent of the electricity used in House A was produced by solar power; 23 percent in House B.
  • The first net-zero energy house total utility costs average $15-$20 a month.
