April 1998
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) instituted the Building Innovation for Homeownership Program (BIH) to recognize new ideas in housing development, design and construction that produce more affordable homes. Part of this initiative was an awards program that selected 63 housing projects, including manufactured, modular, industrialized and site-built structures, across America that employ innovative homebuilding technology and designs that can easily be used by other designers, developers and contractors.
Projects that were eligible for awards under this program used generally available, non-experimental technologies and techniques that varied significantly from typical construction approaches, and were priced below the median cost of new single-family housing in the region where they were constructed. The program sought diversity in applicants and technologies, including non-profit developers and others serving special-user and very low-income needs. The jury included a Partnership Board and representatives of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Building Innovation for Homeownership provides project profiles and details on each of the selected homes, including housing type, size, design, materials and technologies used, financing and costs. Contact information is also included (Note: This document was published in 1998, so contact and cost information may not be up to date).
