Affordable Residential Construction: A Guide for Home Builders - Volume II

July 1987

Affordable Residential Construction: A Guide for Home Builders - Volume II for home builders includes proven cost-saving construction techniques identified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Joint Venture for Affordable Housing (JVAH) program. The guide offers detailed information for builders who want to incorporate affordable housing techniques into their house and lot designs, footings and foundations, wood frame floors, walls and partitions, firewalls, roof framing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and business and marketing efforts.

Not all the techniques included in this guide are applicable in every situation, but home builders will find many ways to lower housing costs. The companion manual, Affordable Residential Land Development – Volume I, contains proven methods for making land planning and development more affordable, as well as actions local governments can take to encourage more affordable housing.
