September 2005
In 2002, the National Center for Seniors Housing Research (NCSHR), in collaboration with the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, conducted the National Older Adults Housing Survey (NOAHS). The purpose of the study was to gain insight into the housing needs and preferences of older adult homeowners, defined as those age 45 and older and to make the information available to representatives of the housing industry and the aging profession.
The NCSHR recently undertook a follow-up analysis of the NOAHS data to determine statistically significant differences in the responses of those age 55-65 and age 65-74 who live in either age-restricted communities or conventional mixed-age communities. This report places the findings of the secondary analysis into the context of five other studies which were selected for inclusion in a Review of Literature. The studies, conducted between 2000 and 2005 were selected based upon similarities in the data collected with the data from NOAHS.
