Adobe, Cob, Soil-Cement & Rammed Earth

Building with soil based materials

We are a father & son team who have been researching and planning to build our own rammed earth home here in Dallas for the past 2 years. We have completed training in Arizona and here in Dallas and are starting formal planning toward building by 2008. The only factor we find puzzling is that rammed earth is not more common. We are searching for the answer beyond the fact of the intense labor involved and the consequent lowered profit margin for builders. Is there another reason it is not more common? Other cost factors make the total building cost less expensive, especially in the long run due to energy savings.
