How do I know which code is enforced in my area?

Question:

How do I know which code is enforced in my area?

Answer:

You can find out if the International Residential Code (the code that was developed by combining all of the previous residential model codes) is adopted in your area by using the following document: www.iccsafe.org/government/jurisdictionadoptions.pdf.

If it hasn’t been adopted, you should check with the local building department (county, city, municipality, or township) to determine which code applies in your area. In some instances, codes may be adopted but not enforced. Regardless of enforcement, codes should be followed to ensure public safety.
