Question:

There seems to be a problem with leaking copper pipes that are underground in our area. Is it safe to install copper pipes in our new project?

Answer:

Copper pipe has performed reliably for a long time in many diverse locations throughout the country. There have been infrequent reports of some copper pipe failures in below-ground installations. Some of the theories presented as a possible cause include exposure to certain types of aggressive soils that damage the pipe, galvanic action, thermo-galvanic action, corrosive chemicals, dissimilar soils used as backfill, and stray electrical currents. Consult with your local utilities and code officials for their input on causative factors in your area. For more details on these issues, search www.Toolbase.org.
