What can I do to mitigate the premature paint failure and warping of the wood on the siding of my home?

Question:

What can I do to mitigate the premature paint failure and warping of the wood on the siding of my home?

Answer:

Try installing the siding on vertical furring strips. This gives a plane for water to drain out and helps air circulation behind the siding panels. Also, make sure the back of the siding is primed with either a water-repellent or -suitable paint. The Forest Products Laboratory provides tips to prevent premature paint failure of siding products.
