How much can a wall support if it’s framed with 2x4 wood studs spaced at 16 inches on center?

Question:

How much can a wall support if it’s framed with 2x4 wood studs spaced at 16 inches on center?

Answer:

According to Table R602.3 (5) of the 2003 International Residential Code (IRC) walls framed with 2x4 lumber spaced at 16 inches on center can be used to support one story and a roof. Therefore, this type of wall assembly is limited to two-story construction. Lumber should be stud grade or higher. Also note that studs should be sheathed on at least one face with a rigid material such as gypsum or wood structural panel.
