Flitch Plate and Steel I-Beams

January 1981

The Flitch Plate and Steel I-Beams manual provides guidance for selecting and designing with flitch plate beams and steel I-beams. This manual consolidates existing information, adds new information where necessary, and provides builders with a direct method for determining the appropriate and economical structural beam for a specific design. The beams are designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice to provide maximum efficiency for the intended use.

The guide’s section on flitch plate beams includes detailed chapters on nail and bolt spacing and material requirements, as well as a beam cost estimate sheet that can help calculate labor and material costs. This section also provides indexes to steel flitch plate beam designs and steel shape beam designs, as well as allowable loads tables. The section on steel I-beams includes a cost estimate sheet and allowable loads tables.
